HHS Begins HIPAA Privacy and Security Audits

The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) has announced that it will begin auditing covered entities, including employer group health plans, required to comply with the privacy and security requirements of the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA). HHS expects audits to begin in November 2011 and conclude by December 2012 under its pilot audit program. Under this pilot program, up to 150 audits will be conducted by HHS’s Office for Civil Rights (OCR).
