An Evolved Leader

Aon, a Gaelic word meaning oneness, began its official journey in 1982 when the Ryan Insurance Group merged with Combined International Corporation. Throughout the 1980s and 1990s, strategic acquisitions and organic growth fueled Aon’s expansion in the global insurance marketplace.

  • 1680:Hudig-Langeveldt founded in the Netherlands
  • 1939:Stone purchases American Casualty Insurance Co. of Dallas, Texas
  • 1947:The company is consolidated as the Combined Insurance Co. of America
  • 1964:Patrick Ryan starts the Ryan Insurance Group
  • 1982:Merger with Ryan Insurance Group
  • 1987:Name is officially changed to Aon
  • 1992-2000:The purchase of several insurance brokerage companies lead to vital growth
  • 2008:Benfield Group Limited acquired—Aon Benfield becomes largest reinsurance firm in the world
  • 2009:Aon signed a four year shirt sponsorship deal with English football giant Manchester United
  • 2010:Aon acquired human resources consulting firm Hewitt Associates
