Europe, the US and some Latin-American regions, have suffered some significant blackouts during the last decade. Last year’s dramatic events in Japan where hundreds of factories in the automotive, graphic, chips and other high-end components were ‘put in the dark’ have starkly demonstrated the vulnerability of our economic models to unexpected and long-lasting power cuts. This paper examines the trends and protection mechanisms in place from an insurance perspective.
