Book Wisely: Secrets to Finding a First-Class Cruise

Aug 17, 2016 | by Aon

Six tips to maximize your cruise travel experience from the start

You’ve planned, you’ve saved, you’ve convinced your significant other, family or friends that this is the year you embark on that cruise you’ve always talked about doing. Whether looking for great value or world-class luxury, you’ll find there are endless options for cruise packages. But you’re in luck -- we have some tips to  to help you maximize your travel experience.

1. Connect with the experts

With so many types of cruise experiences, destinations and services to explore, it can be difficult to narrow your search to find the right fit. There are a number of cruise experts, reviews and books that can help you become better educated about your options. Cruise line representatives and travel agents, particularly ones specializing in cruises, can be great support for vetting options and prices.

2. Pick your timing wisely

Like any vacation, planning it and selecting the perfect cruise can be part of the fun! For optimum selection of cabin types, preferred itineraries and promotional rates, it’s best to book early: 12-18 months in advance. If you can’t commit that far out, try to book at least 6-12 months in advance. Many cruise lines are giving their best deals early on, and waiting for any last-minute deals may only limit your selection of ships, sailings and types of cabins, and may not save you any money.

3. Explore different ports

Cruises are offered from a variety of ports, so look at all your options to find ones that will be easier and more cost effective for you to get to and from. You may also find attractive cruise package pricing from certain ports as you do your travel research.

4. Protect your investment

A cruise can be a good sized vacation investment so it’s smart to spend a few extra dollars to get travel protection. After all, life happens and travel protection can be a savior if you hit a snag before or during the trip. Check out the policies offered through your cruise line to get coverage that’s tailored to the type of cruise you’re taking.
