In the last 10 year’s avian flu has become a real and present threat to UK poultry farmers and in 2007 the disease hit the UK.
Even the largest and most efficiently run business, with the highest levels of bio-security, cannot be certain they will not suffer from avian flu. If you were unfortunate enough to suffer an outbreak, what would the financial impact on your business be?
Current compensation
The financial impact is mainly due to the way compensation is paid. Presently, DEFRA will pay you compensation for the healthy birds you have to cull, but the amount is limited to the market value of the birds immediately prior to culling.
Losses not compensated for
DEFRA will not compensate you for:
- the shortfall between the compensation value and the income you would have received had you been able to complete the production cycle
- the revenue you will lose during the period that you are unable to restock – although you will continue to have to pay such costs as staff, rent and rates
