Prepare to Respond: Key steps to mitigate property losses on a global scale

As more organizations shift to a larger domestic foot print and/or a global operational platform, the need for expansive business continuity and loss mitigation plans is increasing. Hurricane Katrina taught many difficult lessons, including that without immediate attention, a relatively minor property loss can bubble out of control, and can lead to a devastating financial impact. Preparing to respond to such events with a solid loss mitigation strategy will minimize the potential for loss of income and expedite the insurance recovery process.

Supply chain Liability Risks in Emerging Markets

Multinationals sourcing or operating in emerging countries face increasing liability exposures. Recently we have had the opportunity to see in the media events caused by suppliers to multinationals in emerging markets. Managing those liability risks is a complex task for multinationals. Aon has developed a solution:

  • We advise multinationals clients on establishing the appropriate insurance requirements for their suppliers around the world in an effort to mitigate and manage the liability exposure. This ensures that the supplier has adequate insurance in case a liability event occurs, protecting the client.
  • We develop a global insurance program "sponsored" by the client and administered by Aon. Suppliers will have the option to buy the coverage from this Program.

In emerging economies, the insurance market is not as sophisticated as in Western countries. This makes it difficult for local suppliers to purchase the requested liability insurance (that would protect the client in case of a liability claim arising). The coverage might not be available in the country or has a very high cost that would be loaded indirectly to the client in the supply cost. The client encourages ("sponsors") suppliers to access the global program at very competitive rates, ensuring that the liability risk it's being efficiently managed. It benefits the supplier as well, protecting their small operation by leveraging the cost of insurance with the rest of suppliers worldwide.
