University of Queensland claim first round of inaugural Uni7s series

25 August 2017 - The University of Queensland have emerged victorious in a tough Gold Medal match against Bond University 15 to 5, at the University of Tasmania Stadium in Launceston on Saturday evening.

The win ensures that University of Queensland will claim maximum points of 20 out of the first leg of the series, with three rounds left to play over September.

In the other results Macquarie University claimed the Bronze Medal with a hard-fought win over Griffith University 17-7.

University of new England, led by Aussie 7s star, Alicia Quirk took out Fifth Place with the University of Canberra claiming sixth position.

In the battle to avoid the wooden spoon the University of Adelaide, led around the paddock by Evania Pelite, took out seventh place, leaving the hosts, University of Tasmania in eighth position.

University of Queensland Captain, Mackenzie Sadler said: “So over the moon! The girls have worked so hard to be here, to come away with a win as well. It’s indescribable.

“It was such a tight game. We have had trial games against Bond and Griffith before, so we knew it was going to be some tough games. We’re just happy to get up.”

Bond University Captain Stacey Flood said: “Definitely put it up against UQ today better than what we did yesterday and we built on all of our performances since yesterday.

“We’re not coming out with the win but we are coming happy to build for the next tournament and hopefully we can get the win there.

“It’s brilliant to have the Australian girls coming in to help their team’s talent depth. The talent is really good here, so as we get more game time it’s only going to get better, so it’s brilliant.”

Australian University Sport CEO, Don Knapp said: “The Series is off to a resounding start following a solid performance by The University of Queensland, taking out all five of its games to win Gold.

“The calibre of rugby and sportsmanship conducted these past two days confirms there is significant appetite for national league university competitions”.

“All eight participating universities fielded exceptional talent after months of training and preparation – I commend all teams on contributing to this historical, first national Aon Women’s University Sevens Series.”

The teams will travel to Sydney for round two of Aon Uni 7s Series to be hosted by Macquarie University kicking off on September 9 at Macquarie University Playing Fields.
