Hurricane Laura made landfall as a Category 4 storm near Cameron, Louisiana on August 27, 2020 with a maximum wind speed of 150 mph (240 kph) after tying the record for the fastest intensification rate in the Gulf of Mexico during a 24-hour period. This tied as the strongest hurricane to make landfall in Louisiana since 1856. Total economic and insured losses were expected to reach into the billions of dollars (USD).
