Psychosocial Safety and Workers’ Compensation Risk

With declining mental health in organisations and society, employers have been facing significant costs from Workers’ Compensation claims, lost productivity, employee turnover and absenteeism. Regulations have been introduced to further protect workers through explicit, risk-based laws that focus on the management of risk rather than employee self-care and training. Whilst these laws are designed to make organisations and leaders more accountable for providing mentally safe workplaces, it is also important to recognise the benefits of having oversight of organisational psychosocial risk. This session will explore the status of employee mental health and psychosocial risk management through the lens of current and recent Work Health & Safety and Workers’ Compensation regulatory changes. Traditional risk assessment methods are based on process and policy compliance, whereas psychosocial risk assessments are now based largely on employee perception. We will discuss how organisations can better understand employee perceptions when assessing their psychosocial risk profile, and why it’s important.
