Since our first forum in 2024, run-on has become an increasingly popular endgame strategy, and new legislation has brought us to the verge of mainstream ongoing surplus release... And yet many schemes are still in the process of agreeing what an optimal run-on looks like for them. Others are finding that surplus sharing discussions can be fraught and difficult to reach consensus. Our 2026 Forum is therefore dedicated to exploring some of the barriers to agreeing and implementing best practice, as we ask (and attempt to overcome): "So, what's stopping you?"

With the Pension Schemes Act now in place and the draft regulations coming into effect in April 2027 now under consultation, run-on strategies have reached a watershed moment. Recent messaging from The Pensions Regulator further reinforces this direction, particularly around the importance of an agreed surplus policy, whether running-on or buying out in future. We are delighted to confirm that The Pensions Regulator will be making a keynote address and taking your questions.

Furthermore, there is wide perception that Run-on is only suitable for mid – large schemes. However this is not necessarily the case, and we will elaborate on how run-on can bring cost and efficiency to schemes of all sizes.

This Forum is designed for pension scheme sponsors and trustees and decision-makers who are:

  • Currently running on or considering run-on as part of their endgame strategy
  • Looking to unlock value from surplus in a controlled and practical way
  • Seeking clarity on how to move from feasibility to implementation and reach agreement between sponsor and trustee
  • Wanting the network with like-minded peers
