MANCHESTER, 18 December 2025 – Aon plc (NYSE: AON), a leading global professional services firm, through Sports Insure, the firm’s sports insurance specialist group, has been appointed by the British Model Flying Association (BMFA) to provide its approximately 800 affiliated clubs and youth groups with risk management and insurance solutions.
The BMFA is the national governing body for the sport of model flying in the UK with almost 28,000 members. It was founded in 1922 as the Society of Model Aeronautical Engineers and many of the great British aviation pioneers, such as Sydney Camm (designer of the Hawker Hurricane), Richard Fairey, Tommy Sopwith, Alliot Verdon-Roe (founder of Avro) and Frank Whittle (pioneer of the jet engine), were members.
Under the new arrangement, all BMFA members, whether joining directly or via an affiliated club, will be covered to fly all types of model aircraft, including fixed wing, helicopters, gas turbine and drones up to 25kg. Coverage applies for all disciplines including control line, free flight or radio control aircraft, and first person view (FPV) aircraft operated within visual line of sight
Sports Insure has arranged protection for sports clubs, individuals, event organisers and national governing bodies for more than 30 years and will provide BMFA members with direct access to Aon’s insurance experts. In addition, members become part of Aon’s Inspiring Benefits scheme, which offers exclusive savings on items such as holidays and clothing or cinema and train tickets.
Dawn Luby, client management director at Sports Insure, said:
“We’re looking forward to supporting the BMFA with its insurance needs. This arrangement ensures the policy cascades down to its members, so no one is left unprotected. As part of our process, we secured enhanced cover for the membership, which will ensure all members, existing and new, are provided with improved cover.”
Dave Phipps, chief executive officer at the BMFA, said:
“The BMFA strives to provide the best membership package for model aircraft and drone flyers throughout the UK. One of the key benefits of our membership package is the insurance provision. Following our close work with the supportive team at Sports Insure, we have been able to further improve and develop our offering so that it remains the very best available.”
