Moving Towards the Endgame

Hewitt Frozen Pension Plan Research 2010

The Hewitt 2009 Global Risk Survey indicated that 70 per cent of UK schemes were more likely to consider freezing their schemes to future accrual than 18 months previously. To supplement and expand on this finding, Hewitt undertook further research into expectations and experiences related to frozen pension plans.

In this report we share key results from this research along with a brief analysis from frozen plan specialists at Hewitt. The key findings were:

  • Significant concerns about stopping accrual but an expectation is that it will happen for most
  • Seen by many as an interim stage to a risk-free structure - the start of the endgame
  • Early re-alignment of financing strategy desirable before execution towards the endgame
  • Expect more simple operations over time after an initial bedding-in phase
  • Expect longer-term change in role across nearly all functions involved in the pension plan P
  • Positive attitude to seeking multiple services from a single provider as long as quality or value for money are not compromised
