Detecting mobile phone usage while driving

A roadside system is being tested in Norfolk, UK that can detect if a mobile phone is being used in a passing vehicle.

Westcotec, the designers behind the sign say, “the system comprises a sensor capable of detecting vehicles where there are active phone signals. As long as the activation meets certain pre-determined parameters, the sensor will pick up that a driver is using a phone for calling, text or data purposes and will activate the warning sign. This shows an illuminated mobile phone icon within a bright red circle and diagonal red line.”

The technology also reportedly is able to distinguish Bluetooth connections which, when picked up, will prevent the sensor activation.

However, at present the technology is unable to record footage or able to distinguish whether it is the driver or passenger using the mobile phone.
