The Pensions Regulator’s (TPR) recent Annual Funding Statement is something to pay attention to, both for trustees and sponsors alike.

While not providing any unexpected guidance, this year's statement focuses attention on sponsor covenant, investment strategy, macroeconomic uncertainty and, of course, funding.

Many schemes have experienced improved funding levels through a combination of investment out-performance from return-seeking assets and a significant rise in gilt yields. Many are expected to be approaching buyout funding levels. Trustees and sponsors will need to consider if their long-term targets remain appropriate, whether buyout is viable, or to examine other endgame options.
