Pre-Existing Conditions: What to Know Before You Go

Aug 31, 2021 | Aon

  • Purchasing travel insurance can help you feel safer and more secure during your vacation, but like any purchase, you should understand the rules and regulations surrounding it before you buy. And one of the most common points of confusion when purchasing travel insurance is pre-existing conditions – from what this term really means to how it impacts coverage.  According to the team at the Aon Affinity Travel Practice, here’s are three things to know about pre-existing conditions and travel insurance:

  • Is Your Condition Classified as Pre-Existing? There are three main factors to consider when determining if your condition qualifies as pre-existing:
    • The date you pay for your trip, first deposit or full price.
    • The date you buy the travel insurance policy in relation to your trip.
    • The date you were diagnosed with or treated for your condition.

  • What Is a Pre-Existing Condition That Is Not Covered? Pre-existing conditions that are not covered fall under three main rules:
    • An illness, disease, or other medical condition that existed before a policy’s effective date.
    • A condition that is treated or controlled solely through the taking of prescription drugs or medicine – and remains treated or controlled without any adjustment or change in the required prescription throughout the 60-day period before your coverage takes effect.
    • If your doctor advises that you are unable to travel.

  • When Can You Get Coverage for a Pre-Existing Condition? Some travel protection plans may include coverage, provided you meet the requirements of that insurance-specific plan.
    • For example, some plans may provide coverage if you are forced to cancel your trip for a pre-existing condition of a family member who is not going on your trip.
    • Others might provide coverage if the pre-existing condition occurs on the policy’s effective date.
    • These scenarios can vary greatly from plan to plan, so travelers must always read their policy terms and conditions carefully to understand their benefits, exclusions and restrictions. When in doubt, consumers should call their provider for clarification.
The Aon Travel Takeaway? “Understanding how your plan deals with pre-existing conditions helps you understand what you’re purchasing,” said Beth Godlin, president of the Aon Affinity Travel Practice. “It helps cut down on confusion and you ensure you have the right plan for your needs.”
