The Legal and Claims practice within the Financial Services Group at Aon has published the twenty-first edition of the Year in Review.
In terms of frequency and severity of traditional securities class action claims, the number of filings increased to 225 in 2024 from 215 in 2023. While slightly higher, it is in line with the number of filings in the past few years. The number of cases settled in 2024 increased over the prior year, but the median, total, and average settlement amount decreased. However, there were fewer “mega” settlements ($100 million or greater) and more settlements involving SPACs and companies that had declared bankruptcy or delisted, which often tend to be smaller in size.
We address many themes and notable cases in 2024, which deal with numerous insurance coverage issues, from the definitions of claims and related claims to exclusions, to general insurance issues, like consent and subrogation.
