Aon teams with It Gets Better Canada to raise awareness of the issues LGBT youth face – and to help make a difference

Attitudes towards LGBT individuals have come a long way in this country, but so much more needs to be done – especially for LGBT youth. “We all know it’s not always easy growing up gay,” says Chris Gudgeon, Executive Director of It Gets Better Canada, a national not-for-profit dedicated to improving the lives of LGBT youth. “Gay kids are often bullied and marginalized, while many of them hide their true selves out of fear of being rejected by family and friends.”

Now, Aon has teamed up with It Gets Better Canada to help make a difference. The goal of Aon’s Pride in Business, Pride in Community campaign is simple: let LGBT kids know they are loved, appreciated, respected and an important part of their communities.

“At Aon, everybody’s ‘in’ and everybody’s engaged in bringing the best capabilities we have to offer,” says Christine Lithgow, President and CEO of Aon Risk Solutions Canada. “With Pride in Business, Pride in Community, we’re taking the lessons we’ve learned in business to encourage diversity, inclusiveness and a collaborative spirit in all our communities.”

Aon launched the first fundraiser for the campaign - #ShareTheLoveCanada - on June 21 in Toronto, with all proceeds donated to It Gets Better Canada. More events are taking place during local Pride celebrations across the country, including in Halifax, Montreal, Calgary and Vancouver.
For LGBT youth, the campaign sends a powerful message. “During this Pride season, we want to tell these kids that they are part of a caring, supportive community,” says Gudgeon, “where they can be their authentic selves and have a corporate leader like Aon respect and value them for who they are.”
