Survey Results: Key Employee and Partner Benefit Topics and Trends for U.S. Law Firms

In late 2023, the Professional Services Practice at Aon deployed a pulse survey designed to gather data about how large law firms are thinking about a variety of employee and partner benefit topics.

The topics were chosen by reviewing recent requests for benchmarking from clients and consultants. Specifically, the survey covered family forming benefits, coverage for weight loss procedures and medications and medical plan contribution methodologies.

The survey covered both “Am Law 200” firms and firms based outside the United States with gross global revenues in the Am Law 200 range (currently from $120 million to $6.5 billion).

Executive Summary

While the topics covered were varied, but some common themes were identified.

First, law firms remain committed to being family-friendly employers, as evidenced by continued expansion of fertility benefits, bonding leave, and caregiving leave.

Second, law firms are reacting to uncertain economic times by tightening the criteria by which they evaluate new investments into their benefit programs and searching for additional value and efficiency from existing programs.

Third, law firms are designing their benefits with egalitarianism in mind. For example, the gap between attorney and staff eligibility for robust bonding leave benefits has effectively closed and most firms ask their higher earners to contribute more towards the cost of their medical insurance.

While we expect to see most of these trends continue through 2024, we also expect that rising healthcare costs will prompt law firms to reconsider certain plan management strategies like narrow provider networks and tighter prescription drug formularies that have not been popular with benefits committees in the past.
