Avoiding the crowds: Five unspoiled wonders to visit in 2022

Avoiding the Crowds: Five Unspoiled Wonders to Visit in 2022

Feb 03, 2022 | Aon

If you’re looking to satisfy your wanderlust in 2022, consider skipping long lines and avoiding the stress of overcrowded tourist destinations. There’s something to be said about forging a new path – one that may be less-traveled – and discovering the true splendor of adventure, while also saving time and money.

“We know people are yearning for different kinds of travel this year, whether it be new experiences or destinations,” said Beth Godlin, president of the Aon Affinity Travel Practice. “It’s exciting to journey somewhere you haven’t before, but maybe even more so when it’s off-the-beaten path.”

Are you ready to be a travel trendsetter? Here’s our list of five hidden gems to add to your itinerary before everyone else does:

Ladakh, India
Mesmerizing and majestic are two words to describe Ladakh, which means ‘Land of High Passes.’ And it’s easy to understand where the Indian region gets its name. It’s sandwiched between some of the tallest mountain ranges in the world: the great Himalayan, Zanskar, Ladakh and the Karakoram. From magnificent snow-covered peaks to winding rivers, the landscape is breathtaking. But it’s the people – who share Ladakh’s beauty with others – who make it one of the best-kept secrets in Asia.

Lausanne, Switzerland
Lausanne boasts an early Gothic-style cathedral, lively summer festivals and a waterfront Olympic Museum. You won’t run out of things to do in the second-largest city on Lake Geneva. As you walk along the charming cobblestone alleys, you’ll spot medieval castles, picturesque vineyards on rolling hills and the enchanting Swiss Alps. The best part is this city won’t break your bank. But you’ll likely break a sweat exploring – the rolling terrain provides quite the workout.

Jericó, Colombia
Those who visit this beautiful, small pueblo instantly fall in love with its rich local culture and magical mountain views. Many also wonder why it has flown under the radar for so long. Jericó offers something for everyone. If you enjoy exploring nature, there are countless trails, botanical gardens and waterfalls that make you feel like you’re standing on the edge of the world. If you’d rather stroll the streets, there are plenty of vibrant cafes and hostels filled with friendly locals and delicious cuisine.

Keahiakawelo, Lanai
Keahiakawelo takes ‘unchartered’ to a new level. Often called the ‘Garden of the Gods,’ this landmark, which is located on the least populated island on Hawaii, is so mysterious, it looks like it’s from another planet. The best way to get to the main attraction is to drive on an unpaved dirt road. The ride may be a little bumpy, but it’s worth it. Keahiakawelo’s dramatic orange boulders and rock formations make a gorgeous backdrop against the bright blue sky.

Nosy Be, Madagascar
Found on an island off the northwest coast of Madagascar, Nosy Be is a beach lover’s paradise. It truly has it all – white sand beaches, sparkling turquoise water and dreamy palm trees. Travelers from around the world enjoy visiting the archipelago, but it’s not congested with people either. In fact, many beaches are secluded, while others remain completely untouched, leaving lots of opportunities for exploration.

The Aon Travel Takeaway? “It’s important to remember that some of these unspoiled wonders are located far away in off-the-grid towns and villages,” said Godlin. “That means it’s even more important to understand what’s covered in your travel protection policy. What’s included in your health care plan? Are you covered in the event of an emergency medical evacuation? These are important questions to ask yourself – or your provider – before you leave.”
