Top Spots Abroad to Visit Off-Peak

Jul 31, 2021 | AON

International travel is back, and destinations all over the world are ready to receive tourists again. While travelers may be clamoring to head to their favorite destinations at the perfect time, off-peak travel offers reduced crowds, different attractions and helps travelers save money. If you’re considering international travel, here are a few off-peak destinations that provide excitement all year long:

Summertime in the Alps
St. Moritz, Switzerland
Known for its spectacular skiing and winter sports, St. Moritz also has plenty to do during the warmer months. In fact, this snowy enclave first attracted visitors in the summer due to its curative mineral hot springs.  You can still indulge in a dip at a spa, savor the local gourmet fare and even relax with some goat yoga. If being active is more your speed, you can hike through the picturesque Swiss Alps or sail across the cerulean waters of Lake Sils.

Cool Off at Cotopaxi
Quito, Ecuador
Summer in the states means it’s winter in South America, but the weather isn’t freezing. Temperate winters in Ecuador are perfect for taking a scenic trip to Cotopaxi Natural Park. Named for the Cotopaxi stratovolcano, this gem hidden among the Andes Mountains boasts everything the thrill-seeing traveler could want. The cool climate during off-peak season means you won’t overheat during your trek up the volcano or horseback riding. After a long day exploring, be sure to treat yourself to some “chugchucaras”, a traditional pork dish.

Have a Blast in “BrisVegas”
Brisbane, Australia
During the months of December through March, Australia’s answer to Las Vegas, Brisbane, has attractions for the nightlife enthusiast and the relaxed traveler. Top restaurants and nightclubs mix with botanical gardens and vineyards, and off-peak travel means you won’t have to deal with crowds. There’s still a lot happening during the seasonal lull, like the Brisbane Comedy Festival during February and March.

Find Your Own Onsen
Kyoto, Japan
Japan may be known for it’s inviting spring season and blooming cherry blossoms, but wintertime in Kyoto can be just as welcoming. Stay warm by visiting one of the city’s many hot springs and take a visit to one of the cities revered shrines or snow-covered temples. When staying in Kyoto, don’t pass up the chance to stay at a traditional Japanese inn, or “ryokan”. These serene accommodations have been entertaining guests with traditional meals and hospitality for centuries.

Take a Secluded Safari
Limpopo, South Africa
Located near the Soutpansberg mountains, Limpopo is a must-see destination for the wild animal lover. While March and April are known as the best time to embark on a safari, the off-season lasts from May until September and has its own perks. While it may be winter in South Africa during these months, the temperature is warm, and the increased rainy season means you have a higher likelihood of spotting animals. The “lower season” also has the added benefit of less crowds, and fewer mosquitoes.
