Cruising: Family Style

Jul 07, 2022 | Aon

Whether you want to connect with the kiddos or hop on the multigenerational travel trend, cruising is an increasingly popular family vacation option. That’s because the experience offers a little bit of something for everyone – from plenty of onboard activities (and lounging options) to land adventures at your ports of call.

If you’re considering a cruise for your next family vacation, keep these tips in mind to make the most of your time on and off-ship:

Make your Match: From small, intimate ships that visit historic towns along European rivers to mega ships catering to families with children that take you island hopping in the Caribbean, there are so many options to consider. To find your match, keep in mind who’s in your travel party, their interests and personalities.

Embrace the Amenities: Today’s cruise ships are more like floating towns than anything else – boasting everything from full-blown water parks and movie theaters to kids’ camps, yoga studios casinos and more. And then there’s the food. Want a fancy meal for the grown-ups or to enjoy some hot dogs and fries with the kids? Check and check. Be sure to read up on everything your ship has to offer before you depart so you don’t miss an experience.

Maximize Your Time on Shore: One of our favorite things about cruising is the ability to hit up multiple destinations in one trip. If you want a more structured on-shore experience, your ship’s staff will be able to help you book tours and adventures before you even disembark. But you also have the option to take a more independent approach to your time off-ship and explore on your own – just remember to set an alarm so you return to your ship on time!

Consider Travel Insurance: Travel insurance can help protect your family and your financial investment in travel – both before you depart and during your trip. Pro tip: check out the travel insurance offered by your cruise line if you want to purchase protection. That policy will often be more tailored to your cruise and its destinations than outside options.

Aon Travel Takeaway: “Cruising is a great way to travel with a multigenerational group because it offers such a wide range of destinations, amenities, dining and activities,” says Beth Godlin, president of the Aon Affinity Travel Practice. “It’s true crowd-pleaser.”
