Better Being Series: Understanding Burnout in the Workplace
Intro:
Hello there and welcome to another episode of On Aon. This time we’re looking at how companies can make the most of the latest developments in the insurance and reinsurance markets.
Here are Cynthia Beveridge and Anshuman Srivastava to explore how record capital and growing capacity are reshaping both insurance and reinsurance as well as helping businesses manage volatility, build resilience and unlock growth.
Cynthia Beveridge:
Hello and welcome to this Risk Capital episode of On Aon. My name is Cynthia Beveridge, and I'm Chief Broking Officer for Commercial Risk here at Aon.
In today's On Aon episode, we're taking a look at what's changing across the insurance and reinsurance markets, why it matters for organizations, and how business leaders can turn these latest developments to their strategic advantage.
This time of year is an incredibly busy time for the insurance and reinsurance industry. At the start of September, the global reinsurance industry heads to Monaco for rendezvous, where we discuss the state of the market and fire the starting gun on the all-important year-end renewals — all of which has major impacts for reinsurers and their clients.
We've got a lot to discuss and to examine in this episode. So I'm glad to have Anshuman Srivastava, Chief Broking Officer for Reinsurance, with me today.
He will help identify the key developments and give you some key takeaways. Welcome, Ansh.
So, to set the scene from commercial risk perspective, clients are operating in an increasingly complex environment. They're facing geopolitical uncertainty — supply chain disruption, cyber threats, energy transition challenges, and rapid growth in areas like data centers and digital infrastructure.
And at the same time, insurance buyers are finding a market that's becoming supportive. After several challenging years, there's greater capacity and more willingness from insurers to explore innovative ways to help clients manage risk and pursue growth.
Conversations are becoming less about simply buying coverage and more about using insurance and capital strategically.
Ansh, what are you seeing from a reinsurance perspective?
Anshuman Srivastava:
I think the reinsurance market is definitely looking to support the changes that we are we expect and are seeing generally take place with our clients.
In the backdrop, we have record ROEs for the reinsurers. We have an abundance of capacity, and we find that within that landscape, clients are looking for value-driven purchasing. They are using products, a wider variety of products, in order to address some of these challenges. And we are at that phase of the cycle where we are moving into, let's call it a softer market and clients are therefore looking to use products to be able to achieve their desired outcomes.
So demand on the reinsurance side, in our view, will continue to grow as we would expect it to. And supply is being very responsive in respect of product innovation as well as capacity. There is the dynamic of existing players as well as new markets, which also makes it quite interesting.
And then finally, alternative capital is playing or continues to play quite a pivotal role in being supplementary and complementary, more and more complementary actually to traditional capital.
From an Aon perspective, we are definitely seeing a far greater collaboration and work across Commercial Risk, Cynthia, with your colleagues and the reinsurance side of the business.
Cynthia Beveridge:
A lot of people rarely see this part of the industry. Why does record reinsurance capital matter to businesses and individuals?
Anshuman Srivastava:
That's a great question, Cynthia.
I think reinsurance is another form of capital for our clients, but it's a flexible form of capital that could be short-term or long-term.
And reinsurance aligns itself really well with the insurance industry in that it supports our clients in examining their gross-to-net strategies. And these strategies are largely predicated on earnings and capital management.
So what reinsurance does is provide that construct to be able to address some of the capital- and earnings-related challenges that our clients have by addressing the volatility that they might face otherwise on a gross basis.
Cynthia Beveridge:
So in these market conditions, the winners will be those who can build competitive advantage by aligning the right capital with the right risk.
And at Aon, we work across insurance and reinsurance teams seamlessly to maximize our insight of the market and to use that to help firms identify and seize the opportunities to view and manage risk more effectively.
There's a big disadvantage, I believe, in viewing insurance purely as a cost rather than a strategic enabler.
Companies that take that approach may underinvest in resilience, retain wrong risks, or miss opportunities because they just don't understand how capital can support their growth.
Whether it's entering new markets, building a data center, investing in renewable energy or expanding operations, risk financing needs to be part of the business strategy. Ansh how does that resonate with you?
Anshuman Srivastava:
It absolutely does, Cynthia. And fully agree with all your points there. I think from a reinsurance perspective, we see reinsurance as a strategic tool that's available to clients to complement what our traditional capital strategies.
The availability of a variety of products and the associated capital that is aligned with those products, it allows our clients to manage through cycles and allows them to do so successfully in a way that eventually results in accretive impact for them.
We have room for strategic plays, and at the same time, wherever we are in the cycle, there's also opportunistic plays available to our clients, all towards reaching the successful outcomes and metrics that they would like to address.
So I think from a reinsurance perspective, value is best evidenced through solving client challenges. And we achieve these through a short- to long-term perspective, depending on the use of capital, and through timely engagement and communication as well.
So I think that I fully agree with all the points that you've just made, Cynthia.
And then I think also just to add to that, I think data and insight, these are two key drivers that are going to impact or have already impacted industry in a big way, and capital in a big way as well.
We find that the increased level of data granularity, data clarity, and also data cleansing, they provide us access into capital that is interested in understanding our industry better.
More importantly, the insight that follows from an Aon perspective also provides context to this capital and brings in a lot of our investors is certainly into the reinsurance space. Over time, we have also seen very clear evidence that use of data insights as well as technology has unlocked much better options and solutions for our clients, which has been supported by sustainable capital as well.
So without a doubt, data and technology continue to play a key role for us.
Cynthia, what should commercial risk clients be thinking about to get the best of these new opportunities?
Cynthia Beveridge:
I believe the most successful clients start with their business objectives first and work backwards.
They ask, what risks do we want to retain? What risks should we transfer? And what are we really trying to achieve over the next three to five years?
So in this situation, the winners will be those who can actually build a competitive advantage by aligning the right capital with the right risk. And that means viewing renewals as a strategic decision, not simply as a procurement process.
It also means making sure high-quality data is shared with the insurers and looking beyond price to total value to support their growth.
We've spoken a lot about the market and how it's behaving at the moment, but let's shift our focus to two to three years down the line. Ansh what should companies start thinking about now to secure their future success?
Anshuman Srivastava:
That's a great question, Cynthia. I think that we still have a fundamental question around growing the insurance pie in itself and therefore the reinsurance pie being able to support such growth.
There is the optimizing the use of capital and by this I mean alternative and traditional capital, which are seemingly there is an overlap there today, and the lines are certainly blurring.
So a more efficient and continued use of capital towards providing innovative solutions for the eventual insurance actually.
Technology is another area that we would expect a lot of investment and we would expect clients to use technology effectively with the distribution, but also at the same time to be able to articulate their portfolios and therefore access capital.
And then interconnectivity across the value chain, I mean we've started this at Aon many years ago, but this is something that we will continue to use so that we can align and match risk to capital in the most efficient way for the use of our clients.
We will also see an efficient capital construct like Lloyd's continue to grow as one of the platforms for bringing in alternative capital as well.
And then on the front end, I think certainly Aon will continue to innovate. We are seeing facilitation of the business as an efficient way of seeding risk, and we will continue to grow and explore such solutions.
Cynthia Beveridge:
I would add from the client perspective, risk itself is becoming more interconnected. AI, climate volatility, geopolitical instability and supply chain complexity will really require faster, more evidence-based decision making.
Organizations will need a more holistic view of risk, capital and resilience all at the same time.
Future success won't come from simply buying more insurance, I believe it'll come from better data, better analytics, stronger partnerships and much smarter capital allocation.
We've covered a lot of ground over the past few minutes. If there's one or two key highlights you'd like our listeners to come away with, what do you think they should be?
Anshuman Srivastava:
Thanks, Cynthia. So I think that we are entering a fairly exciting phase of the cycle where clients will expand their reinsurance buying strategies for sure to manage their gross to net positions.
That will only expand the use of or the strategic use of reinsurance, which we think will drive outcomes in the short-, medium-, and long-term. And finally, relationships are key and they will remain key to our business in what will be a thriving trading environment and collaboration as well as product innovation will underpin a lot of the success that comes through in the future.
What about you, Cynthia?
Cynthia Beveridge:
I would say insurance isn't just there to respond when something goes wrong. At its best, it's a tool that helps organizations move forward with confidence.
When reinsurers, insurers, and clients all work together effectively, capital becomes much more than just protection. It becomes a catalyst for growth.
