Aon’s actuaries are pleased to release the 26th annual Aon/ASHRM Hospital and Physician Professional Liability Benchmark Analysis, produced in collaboration with the American Society for Health Care Risk Management (ASHRM).

This report, made possible by the ongoing engagement of our benchmark participants, serves as a key resource for the healthcare sector by providing insights into medical professional liability claim cost trends.

The benchmark analysis is designed to be a practical tool for healthcare risk managers, enabling them to better understand and compare their organizations’ cost of risk against industry standards. By examining and comparing claim and exposure data, risk managers and stakeholders can develop strategies to manage costs and improve outcomes. This year’s report analyzes 117,700 hospital and physician professional liability claims totaling $32.9 billion in incurred losses, as well as 14,700 general liability claims amounting to $719.5 million in losses, all from incidents occurring between 2015 and 2024.

This report provides actuarial and underwriting insights on:

About the Benchmark

This benchmark study is produced under a co-marketing agreement between Aon and The American Society for Health Care Risk Management (ASHRM). Participation in this benchmark was open to all ASHRM members.
